JKP was the selected winner of the invited design competition for Huanan International Material City in Longgang, Shenzhen.
The site is an acute rectangular shape, whose shape doesn’t properly support current logistic frequency. Due to its unique shape, the re-development is characterized by a grid system designed for multi-functional usage. By respecting the existing urban fabric, the configuration of functions and the re-organization of the road system integrates well with the current traffic flow, and is strengthened by forming a sequence of spaces moving from entrance plaza, central business district, electronics display hall and exhibition center. The existing gate is retained providing a familiar and pleasant welcome to the patrons. The rearrangement of the traffic network allows visitor drop-off and lobby functions to be served from the back of the commercial buildings, while other visitors are diverted into the underground parking lot ensuring a reduction of crossing traffic and an ease of diversification on the ground. Additionally, an elevated walkway system ensures that pedestrians cross the street safely and conveniently. Located at the east end of the main road, the exhibition center axially terminates the vista of this urban context. An external plaza is formed via a landscaped ramp which leads people to interior circulation spaces leading up to the exhibition center. The open space beneath the roof forms a continuous plaza along the outer perimeter and is integrated with the western gate.
